  • May 1 Dewey launched surprise attack in Manila Bay

  • Us turned to Spanish colony Puerto Rico
  • Us troops quickly took control
  • August 12 Spanish signed armistice ending war

A SPLENDID LITTLE WAR

  • John hay called the war a splendid little war
  • Lasted 4 months 400 Americans killed
  • 2,000 Americans died of diseases
  • African Americans battled segregation
  • Cubans treated African Americans equally

  • 1917 jones act made Puerto Rico a territory of us
  • Granted American citizenship to Puerto Ricans

ACQUIRING THE PHILIPPINES

  • Anti imperialists opposed American enthusiasm
  • People feared competition of Filipino laborers
  • February 1899 Emilio aguinaldo began to fight for independence
  • More than 4,000 Americans died
  • 200,000 soldiers and civilians died
