Infinatives

  • There are 6 types of Infinatives but only 5 are useful to us
  • They are both active and passive

Types of Infinatives

  • Present Active
  • Present Passive
  • Perfect Active
  • Perfect Passive
  • Future Active

Present Active

  • The Present Active uses the 2nd Principle part
  • Take away "RE" 
  • Add endings
  • e.g. Iubere- Iube
  • e.g. Amare- Amat

Present Active (continued)

  • For 3rd conjugation form like Present Passive 3rd

Present Passive

  • Uses 2nd principle part
  • Take away "E"
  • Add "I"
  • Translated as "To be _____ed"
  • e.g. Iubere- Iuberi

Present Passive (continued)

  • 3rd Conjugation
  • Take away "ERE"
  • Add "I"

Perfect Active

  • Uses 3rd Principle part
  • Add "SSE"
  • Translated as "To have _____ed"
  • e.g. Iubere- Iussisse
  • e.g. Amare- Amavisse

Perfect passive

  • Uses Perfect Passive Participle ( 4th P.P with esse)
  • Translated as "To have been _____ed"
  • e.g. Iubere- Iussus esse
  • e.g. Amare- Amatus esse

Future Active

  • (FAP) with esse (4th P.P with "UR" before "US")
  • Translated as "To be about to _____"
  • e.g. Iubere- Iussurus esse
  • e.g. Amare- Amaturus esse

Indirect Statements

What is an Indirect Statement?

  • Reporting something that someone says, sees,hopes, etc.
  • Direct statement- There is water on Mars
  • Indirect statement- I know there is water on Mars

How is it made in Latin?

  • A M&M verb (Head Verb)- they come from you mouth or mind
  • They have an accusative subject and an infinative verb
  • There is no "That" in Latin so it is implied after the M&M verb

Example

  • 1- Head Verb- Video
  • 2- Accusative Subject- Viros
  • 3- Infinative Verb- Necare

Example Translation

  • I see that the men are killing Caesar
