PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Killer whales aren't actually whales!
They are the largest members of the oceanic dolphin family
They also are known as orca or "blackfish"
They can be found in almost all oceans and seas.
Killers whales are a big part of some indigenous cultures mythology and beliefs
Some Native American tribes believe orca are the souls of marine hunters who died at sea
ORCA IS AN EXTRACTION OF 'ORCUS', A ROMAN GOD OF THE UNDERWORLD
Orca have a fearsome reputation as cold blooded killers
Their hunting methods show great intelligence and teamwork
But there's more to these animals than that...
There are three different populations of killer whale....
RESIDENT
these whales live in family groups called pods and feed mostly on fish. They visit the same places consistently
TRANSIENT
These whales live in smaller groups and feed on marine mammals. They roam widely along the coast.
OFFSHORE
These whales live in groups of 20-75 and eat both mammals and fish. They travel far from shore
Orcas' social structure is as complex as humans and elephants
Resident orcas stay with their mothers their whole lives and have solid family units
Evidence shows that each individual pod of killer whales have their own languages and dialect
Each pod also have unique ways of hunting, passed on through new generations
They are more emotionally developed then humans
The killer whale is an incredible animal perfectly designed for life in the wild
There are 45 in captivity
The first killer whale to be placed in captivity was in 1961....
She was placed in a tank in Marineland in Los Angeles. The 17ft whale repeatedly crashed into the walls and died the next day....
During the 60s and 70s nearly 70 whales were taken from the wild
Including the original Shamu
The most notorious capture of killer whales was in the
Puget Sound, Washington in 1970
Five whales were drowned in the process
The bodies of the dead whales washed up 3 weeks later, prompting public concern for killer whale welfare.
One whale captured, Lolita, still survives today
There is an ongoing campaign to release Lolita back to her family in the wild
Tilikum, another whale in captivity also has a campaign to free him
Tilikum is a 32 year old bull orca. He is 22.5 feet long, weighs 12,000 pounds and is surrounded by controversy....
...he has been involved in the deaths of three people....
Keltie Byrne in 1991, a student whale trainer
Daniel.P.Dukes a 27 year old man...
...and Dawn Brancheau, his trainer, in 2010
He mutilated her body and it took a while to retrieve Dawn from the whale
There are barely any recorded incidents of between killer whales and humans in the wild.
In the wild, Orca can live up to 90 years old...
In captivity they rarely live to more than 25
The whales are plagued by health issues in captivity..
They live in forced family groups
You can't be surprised that they behave viciously when they are forced to exist in such an unnatural way...
These animals need to stay wild....
