How it was found
- the Dutch West India Co. explored and began to settle the New York area as early as 1614
- England takes over New Netherlands and calls it New York- 1664
- Peter Minuit buys Manhattan from Indians- 1626

- James, Duke of York sent ships to find land found New York (named it after him)
- King Charles II promised him land

- New York'd first assembly was elected in 1683
- Leisler, rebelled so he set up his own assembly in 1689
- Hung Leisler and kept first assembly

- The Hudson River was populated with: Dutch, French, Poles, Norwegians, Swedes, English, Scots, Irish, Germans, Danes, Bohemians, Portuguese, and Italians. (very polyglot)
