How it was found

  • the Dutch West India Co. explored and began to settle the New York area as early as 1614
  • England takes over New Netherlands and calls it New York- 1664
  • Peter Minuit buys Manhattan from Indians- 1626

Who found it

  • James, Duke of York sent ships to find land found New York (named it after him)
  • King Charles II promised him land

Government

  • New York'd first assembly was elected in 1683
  • Leisler, rebelled so he set up his own assembly in 1689
  • Hung Leisler and kept first assembly

Population

  • The Hudson River was populated with: Dutch, French, Poles, Norwegians, Swedes, English, Scots, Irish, Germans, Danes, Bohemians, Portuguese, and Italians. (very polyglot)
  • New York's Population was about 172,920, including vermont

  • Their sharp-stepped gable roofs became a permanent part of the city's architecture, and their merchants gave Manhattan much of its original bustling, commercial atmosphere.

  • New Hampshire and New York fought for Vermont
