DESCRIPTION

  • Brain cell connections and the cells themselves degenerate and die, destroying memory and other important mental functions. Memory loss and confusion are the main symptoms. No cure exists, but medications and management strategies may temporarily improve symptoms.

  • Discovered in 1906

SYMPTOMS

  • Memory loss that disrupts daily life
  • Challenges in planning or solving problems
  • Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, work and everyday activities
  • Confusion with time or place
  • Trouble understanding visual images
  • Problems with words or speaking
  • Misplacing objects or troubles retracing steps
  • Change in mood or personality
  • Withdrawal from work or social activities

MANIFESTATION

  • Individuals begin to forget things and begin to forget how to do daily activities. Each person varies

  • Alzheimer's is a disease that is a form of dementia

  • Alzheimer's causes dementia and is an specific form of dementia

  • Dementia focuses on impaired thinking and memory
  • Can be caused by Parkinson's and Huntington's disease
