STATIC ACTIVE STRETCHING

Definition:

The strength of the opposing muscle groups to hold the limb in position for the stretch. The muscle group is stretched without moving the limb itself

How Long to Hold the Stretch:

-Hold for 10-30 seconds
-1-2 stretches per muscle

ADVANTAGES

  • Increases active flexibility
  • Alleviates tension in muscles
  • Reduces stress

DISADVANTAGES

  • Risk of injury when performed before strength or endurance training
  • Decreased maximum strength when performed before strength training
  • Decreased long term training effect when performed before or during strength training
