The church was first built by Constantine the Great in 330 A.D. It has had a rough past as it has been burned by the Persians in 614, restored by Modestus, and destroyed by Caliph al-Hākim Bī- Amr Allāh in 1009.
The church of Holy sepulcher was then restored by Byzantine emperor, Constantine |X Monomachus in the 12th century. The church now has had its current building since 1810.
