CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE

  • The reason this place is so significant is because of its location.
  • It is located at the site of Jesus' tomb, where he was crucified and barried, as well as where he rose again.

LOCATION

  • The church of the Holy Sepulcher is in the Northwest quarter of the Old city of Jerusalem.
  • 31.7785° N, 35.2296° E

LOCATION

  • Compared to the other holy cities, the holy sepulcher as well as the wailing wall are both located in Jerusalem, Israel.
  • However, the Kaaba is located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

HISTORY

  • The church was first built by Constantine the Great in 330 A.D. It has had a rough past as it has been burned by the Persians in 614, restored by Modestus, and destroyed by Caliph al-Hākim Bī- Amr Allāh in 1009.

  • The church of Holy sepulcher was then restored by Byzantine emperor, Constantine |X Monomachus in the 12th century. The church now has had its current building since 1810.

  • The church contains the two holiest sites in Christianity
  • During the building of the Church, Constantine’s mother, Helena, is believed to have rediscovered the “True Cross”.
  • The rebuilt church site was taken from the Fatimids by the knights of the First Crusade on 15 July 1099.

  • The entrance to the church, a single door in the south transept — through the crusader facade.
  • In the center of the Rotunda is the chapel called the Aedicule, which contains the Holy Sepulchre itself.
