  • The Dutch language is considered to have originated in about AD 700 from the various Germanic dialects spoken in the Netherlands region. A proces of standardization started in the Middle Ages.

  • The Netherlands has 16 million inhabitants and Dutch is the only official language of the country. Frisian, spoken in the Nothern province of Fryslân, has been granted local official language status too. Frisian is very close to English.
