Greek Mythology

Like most Ancient civilizations, the Greeks were polytheistic

Their gods were fierce, powerful, and flawed (much like normal humans)

The myths and tales of these gods are a direct reflection of ancient Greek culture, especially in specific city-states

There were hundreds of Greek gods, but the most famous were the Olympians

Zeus

King of the gods, god of thunder and the sky

Hera

Queen of the gods, godess of marriage and motherhood

Apollo

God of the sun, and music

Artemis

Goddess of the moon, and the hunt

Athena

Goddess of wisdom, and victory in war

ARES

GOD OF WAR

Aphrodite

Godess of love

Poseidon

God of the seas

Hades

God of the underword

These Greeks used mythology to explain everyday events (The Lotus-Eaters)

Cautionary tales (Circe)

And often blended mythology with their history (The Trojan War)
