Make 21st century curriculum revisions

Lets explore

  • 8 year cycle
  • Assessment system
  • Technology usage
  • DI and UDL
  • PD implementation

8 year cycle - Year 1

  • Unpacking and capacity building
  • Based on Year 8 curriculum audit or new standards.

8 year cycle - Year 2

  • Resource selection and unitizing of standards
  • Identify processes and practices to develop throughout units horizontally and vertically.

8 year cycle - Year 3

  • Make 1st purchase
  • 1/2 of money allocated to group based on spending matrix would be spent in this year.

8 year cycle - Years 4-7

  • Begin curriculum mapping
  • Intentionally include UDL, technology, and formative assessment
  • Year 7 make remaining purchases if needed

8 year cycle - Year 8

  • Curriculum Audit
  • Review data dialogues
  • Needs assessment

SRG Reboot

  • Shift from earning to learning
  • Focus on FA against SC
  • Data collection system
  • Adjustments in-the-moment not just next day

Technology

  • Utilize the technology we do have to aid in FA:
  • Strategies of
  • Data collection
  • Feedback

UDL

  • Years on DI
  • What about UDL

DI

  • “The role of the teacher is to modify content and processes in order to address the needs and learning styles of each student” (CAST, Inc., 2013).

DI

  • By attending to the individual unique needs of each student, the teacher reactively attempts to invite the student to the learning by making learning accessible through what interests the student.

UDL

  • Designing a curriculum around UDL principles is, “about figuring out different ways to represent ideas and varying ways we allow students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills.” (Kim Greene; Scholastic Administration, Spring 2015).

UDL

  • UDL is about fixing the curriculum by effectively designing one that has flexible options available to all students as they strive toward the same high level goals.

UDL

  • Year after year, regardless of the diversity that will exist in teacher classes, the curriculum, if built through UDL, will attend to the “neurological variability” (CAST, Inc., 2013) that exists amongst all learners.

UDL

  • UDL through brain research has identified the need for learners to understand the what, how, and why of learning through the multiple means of 1) Representation, 2) Expression, and 3) Engagement.

Implementation

  • Subcommittee
  • Needs Assessment
  • Activities
  • Resources
  • Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Support and Training

Subcommittee

  • To engage in a needs assessment in the aforementioned areas proposed.

  • To identify the correlation of the impact vs. ease of implementation for these proposed areas.
  • Begin an action plan.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Measure the implementation
  • Internal Review team visits
  • Administrative observation
  • Surveys
  • Data collection

Supports and Training

  • Evaluate current PD plan of Early Release, 1/2 days, and full-day start-ups.
  • Look to 12 PLC, 2 hour PD times/year.
  • 2 Vertical, 3 hour PD times/year
  • Additional voluntary PD still
