PRESENTATION OUTLINE
NO MR. BOND, I EXPECT YOU TO DIE
Existentialism:
Emphasizes the uniqueness and freedom of the human person as an individual (what makes each life a unique, personal experience) as opposed to the essence of a human being (what makes us all alike).
According to Heidegger:
Humans experience death as a constant possibility. He calls this constant awareness our state of "being-towards-death".
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH DEATH?
HOW DOES JAMES BOND DEAL WITH DEATH?
The Seducer:
The seducer is a person who seeks extravagant things in life to distract them from the possibility of death. Kierkegaard thought a person like this was emotionally immature.
THIS CLEARLY DESCRIBES 007
The Tyrant:
This archetype is a person who craves power and wealth. To Plato these people are the lowest of the low, the typical Bond villain.
The Guardian:
Plato would describe as the best soldier. They protect others, however, are very prideful and wish to take credit for everything.
The Philosopher King:
A person who would be viewed by Plato as the best to lead. They reason things out. To them, the ends always justify the means.
MI6 gives their agents numbers to dehumanize them. When people are turned into numbers letting them die becomes easier.
Bond is basically an assassin for the British Government. In the United States political assassination is prohibited. England, not so much.
THE OBJECTIFICATION OF WOMEN
For Kant, "every adult person, women included, has inner worth and dignity and must not be treated as a means to an end."
However, "when a rational adult chooses to engage in an action that does not harm anyone else, then that person is fully justified in making her decision."
Yin and Yang in the Bond films is best represented by gender equality in the more resent films.
