SYSTEMS THINKING

OUR THEME FOR THIS CDI CYCLE
For this cycle of CDI, we will be learning about Systems. A better understanding of system dynamics will help us to better prepare for and enact meaningful change processes and healthy congregational development.

TWO SYSTEMS THEORIES

FAMILY SYSTEMS & GENERAL SYSTEMS
Both theories are used in CDI and they are related. However, they have some important differences, too.

FAMILY SYSTEMS THEORY

  • Group Development
  • Use of Self
  • Managing Conflict
  • Building Trust
  • Understanding Anxiety
Based on the work of Murray Bowen, an understanding of family systems theory helps to understand key concepts and skills.

GENERAL SYSTEMS THEORY

  • Core Frameworks as Lenses
  • Discovery Processes
  • Environment & Context
  • Identifying Stakeholders
  • Strategy & Analysis
Also known as Open Systems Theory, this came out of biological science (Bertalaffney). This theory helps us understand that no single action will have a single impact, and unintended consequences should not be unexpected.

SELF-DIFFERENTIATION

MANAGING INDIVIDUAL NEEDS & WANTS
Self-differentiation is a space on a continuum that defines our relationship to others as it relates to managing individual needs and wants. We can try emotional cut-off or enmesh meant, but neither of these allows us to be fully individual while staying connected. That is the goal of self-differentiation.

ACUTE OR CHRONIC?

IDENTIFYING ANXIETY IN THE SYSTEM:
Behaviors will differ depending on whether the anxiety in the system is related to an acute event, or is long-standing. Often, when organizational survival has been a long-term worry, anxiety can become chronic. Other times it has to do with the spiritual maturity and development of members.

GENERAL SYSTEMS

Generally, this theory is based on the idea of:

Input --> Transformation Process --> Output

PRESENTING ISSUES

SURFACING ASSUMPTIONS, PATTERNS, MYTH
There eyre many things that have impact on a system, including environment, context, history, past success and failure. Surfacing these issues is key to prevent your organization from running aground on hidden assumptions.

SENGE'S DISCIPLINES

  • Mental Models
  • Shared Vision
  • Personal Mastery
  • Team Learning
  • Systems Thinking
Mental models: espoused theory vs. theory-in-use
Shared vision: commitment vs. compliance
Personal mastery: creative tension vs. emotional tension
Team learning: dialogue vs. discussion
Systems thinking: structure influences behavior
