PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ASPERGER SYNDROME

  • A DEVELOPMENT DISORDER RELATED TO AUTISM AND CHARACTERIZED BY HIGHER THAN AVERAGE INTELLECTUAL ABILITY COUPLED WITH IMPAIRED SOCIAL SKILLS AND RESTRICTIVE, REPETITIVE PATTERNS OF INTEREST AND ACTIVITIES

SYMPTOMS

  • Motor skill delays (clumsy lack-ward)
  • Lack of social awareness
  • Difficulty making and sustaining friendships
  • Stereotypical and repetitive motor patterns such as hand flapping or arm waving

RISK FACTORS

  • Asperger syndrome is connected to autism so the causes are similar, the causes are unidentified but believed to be inherited.

PREVENTIONS

  • There are no preventions to asperger syndrome. It is something that is inherited and there is nothing you can do.

TREATMENT

  • You can not fully cure Asperger Syndrome, but there are things you can do to help assist it.
  • Social, behavioral, and/or educational interventions.
  • Speech language classes .
  • Social skills training programs, including training in the awareness of social cognition.
  • Adaptive skills or life- skills training

HOW COULD YOU HELP A FRIEND?

  • You can help them practice social interactions, speech, and language.
  • You can help them organize note take, assist them while they read and comprehend things.

HOW CAN YOU HELP YOURSELF?

  • To help yourself you will have to put yourself in social situations and practice talking and listen to yourself talk (record yourself).

  • In your body your genetic genes are exposed to toxics.

STATISTICS

  • It is 5 times more common in boys than girls
  • It happens in 1 to 68 births it occurs
  • 1 out of every 110 children in the U.S. has Asperger Syndrome
  • Estimated to effect 2 and 1/2 of every 1,000 children

  • People with Asperger Syndrome have normal to above average intelligence but typically have social difficulties.
