POMPEII

  • The ancient Greeks settled in Pompeii around the 8th century.
  • Pompeii was always filled with vacationers.
  • Pompeii was located near the mountain of Vesuvius

POMPEII

  • Buildings like elegant houses, elaborate villas, shops, taverns, cafes, brothels, and bathhouses.
  • Townspeople and slaves rushed in and out of small factories and houses.

  • Pompeii was 160 acres
  • Consisted of 20,000 residents

VESUVIUS

  • Has Erupted dozens of times in the past 2,000 year
  • Created a black cloud 12 miles high(more than double the size of Mount Everest)
  • August 24, 79 AD Vesuvius exploded and destroyed Pompeii

VESUVIUS

  • Many people evacuated when the smoke cloud formed but the people that stayed behind were soon killed by a poisonous gas that came down from the mountain
  • About 2,000 people died

REDISCOVERY

  • Underneath all the dust and ash Pompeii was almost exactly how it was 2000 years before
  • The people that were killed remained intact under the ashes

REDISCOVERY

  • Everyday objects and household goods littered the streets.
  • Later archaeologists even uncovered jars of preserved fruit and loaves of bread
  • Famous families were displayed in portraits and paintings found in piles of ashes and dust

  • Toward the end of the 5th century, the warlike Samnites, an Italic tribe, conquered Campania, and Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae became Samnite towns.
  • After the second samnite war Pompeii became “allies” of Rome

HISTORY

  • City soon became Romanized in institutions, architecture, and culture.
  • An earthquake hit in 62 AD
  • Pompeii had not yet recovered from this catastrophe when final destruction overcame them 17 years later.

CONCLUSION

  • Life was very busy in Pompeii
  • The people that were killed remained intact under the ashes for almost 2000
  • Buildings like elegant houses and elaborate villa, shops, taverns, cafes, brothels, and bathhouses.
