Forming North Carolina

  • Charles II gave land south of Virginia to eight nobles called Lord Proprietors
  • This was a reward for their help to him to gain the throne after his dad had been overthrown

  • Charles II issued a new charter to a group of eight English noblemen, granting them the land of Carolina (charter named Charter of Carolina)
  • The Charter of Carolina gave the nobles the authority to run the government

The UNique Colony

  • Started out as one colony named Carolina (originally spelled "Carolana") then separated - North and South Carolina
  • They produced tobacco in small farms
  • Indigo became a cash crop - to sell
  • The area was called "Albermarle Sound" before it was called Carolana
