WHO IS MY EXPLORER?
He was named after his father.
His father died when he was two years old.
He was born on April 30, 1770 in England.
He died in1857 and was blind.
As a boy, went to the Gray Coat School and he was good at math and science.
The Northwest Company from Canada visited the school and chose to take him and teach him to be a fur trader.
He worked with them for a long time.
He married a Metis woman named Charlotte and had 13 children.

WHAT DID MY EXPLORER DO?
He was a good fur trader.
He enjoyed studying the environment and was a good writer.
He made big maps.
He is known for mapping western Canada from Hudson Bay to the Pacific Ocean.
He built a trading post called Manchester House.

WHERE DID MY EXPLORER DO HIS EXPLORATIONS?
He mapped the U.S. border.
He joined the Northwest Company in England and came to Canada.
He set up Manchester House as a trading posts in western Canada.
He discovered a pass from the Colombia River to the mouth of the Pacic Ocean.
He mapped western Canada.

WHEN DID MY EXPLORER GO EXPLORING
In 1807 he found a pass though the rockies.
In 1811 he followed the Columbia river to the mouth of the Pacific Ocean
He did most of his explorations between 1797 and 1812.

WHY DID MY EXPLORER GO EXPLORING?
He made a trading post for other traders to trade and rest at.
It was his job to make maps of the trading routes and trading posts for the Northwest Company.
He liked being in the outdoor environment.

HOW DID MY EXPLORER DO HIS EXPLORATIONS?
He took good field notes and kept a journal.
He used a canoe and a horse to get around.
He used a good telescope
He used walking boots and snowshoes.
He learned how to speak several Indiginous languages to communicate.

HOW DID THINGS CHANGE AFTER MY EXPLORER DID HIS EXPLORATIONS?
He made big, detailed maps and mapped all of the places he went.
People started using these maps to understand western Canada.
He mapped a total of 3.9million km.

REFLECTIVE COMMENT
He was a communicator because he learned to speak with the Indigenous people.
He was a risk-taker because he did dangerous things like walking through the Rocky Mountains, canoeing down rivers and having to survive in the wilderness.
