Game of thrones season 5 opening

By Elsie Williamson

Camera angles

  • There are many shots used in game of thrones such as: Close ups: This is shown as soon as the opening starts with a focus on a large contraction with a bright yellow centre, with many rings, with a pattern of castles and dragons on it. This pattern is the focus of the close up until it zooms out to show the whole thing. Therefore this may have been used to inform the

  • audience that this is a fantasy show and that this it is an escapism from real life. Long shots: This is shown when viewing a three-dimensional map which is the centre of the whole opening. There are a mixture of places shown through this shot with quick jump cuts to show the fast pace of the opening and a certain place which is important to the show. Also the various noble houses are

  • shown at the end through animals when showing the title. All of this detail makes it easy to understand that this program is aimed at an adult but mainly male audience. I have proven this point by finding a graph online from a link I will put below. This is shown on the following slide.

Camera angles part 4

  • High and low angled shots: This is when building's are shown to be rising. This gives them a sense of importance and shows their significance. However, they also may have also been used make them seem intimidating and show the power the building holds.

Camera Movement

  • Tracking: This is shown when the camera is following the map to all the different places. It also gives the audience a sense of adventure which links to the shows genre of fantasy.
  • Pan: This is shown when all angles of the 3 dimensional building growing are gradually being added to. This shows the quick development and detail in the show suggesting the adult audience.

mise-en-scene

  • Throughout the entire opening there are many buildings which appear old fashioned. Which tells the audience that the program is not set in current times but is set in the past. Also the dreary colours used (brown, blacks and greys) give clues that the show is set in the late medieval period.Informing the audience that this is not your normal TV drama but is a fantasy drama.

Sound

  • The theme tune was composed by Ramin Djawadi. It is an orchestral piece which highly reflects the shows theme. This is shown through the instruments used such as taiko drums which is a instrument which was commonly used in the past to intimidate and scare away enemy's due to being a battle field instrument. This therefore reflects the violence the show holds. Also the use

  • of the string orchestra and low bass instruments create suspense and tension. Therefore, showing that the show holds a lot of drama and thrill for the audience. The repetition in the musical theme tune also builds the tension because it gradually gets quicker and sounds simular to a heart racing .

Editing

  • Quick cuts: This is used when first introducing the map and to show the gradual zoom in to it. However, the cuts make the pace quicker. Therefore this creates the effect of a lot information been told at once. Once again showing the complexity of the show.
  • Expansion of time: This is shown in the opening when the shots are sped up. This is used to show lots of buildings quickly. It also is used to show power and quick development.

Typography

  • The font used in game of thrones is gothic but modern and was made by Charlie Samways. Therefore it is sans-serif due to it's sharp and straight structure.
  • The placement of all the people involved in the making of the show is always in the corners in all capital letters and larger than the job roles that may be above them. This shows that although

  • their names are not the complete focus of the screen they are still important. It also gives more detail to what their role was rather than just their name. However, it could also have been used to show the high scale of the show. Another detail is that at the side of each name there is a symbol, which could have been used to reflect the theme of the show which is the different noble houses. But
