PRESENTATION OUTLINE
What are we going to learn?
OBJECTIVE.
You will look at how raw materials are manufactured and converted into finished products in secondary sector industries.
WHAT IS THE SECONDARY SECTOR?
- The secondary sector uses raw materials from the Primary Sector and converts them into finished products.
- This process is called MANUFACTURING.
- Most manufacturing is done in FACTORIES.
EXAMPLES OF HEAVY INDUSTRIES ARE:
- Petrochemical industry.
- Metal industry.
- Shipbuilding industry.
SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY
- Shipbuilding is the construction of ships. It normally takes place in a specialized facility known as a shipyard.
Shipbuilding and ship repairs, both commercial and military, are referred to as "naval engineering".
METAL INDUSTRY
- Metalworking is the process of working with metals to create individual parts, assemblies, or large-scale structures.
- The term covers a wide range of work from large ships and bridges to precise engine parts and delicate jewelry.
- It includes a wide range of skills, processes, and tools.
PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRY
- Petrochemicals are chemical products derived from petroleum.
- Some chemical compounds made from petroleum are also obtained from other fossil fuels, such as coal or natural gas, or renewable sources such as corn, palm fruit or sugar cane.
WHAT KIND OF ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE DOES HEAVY INDUSTRY CAUSE?
Light industry uses smaller machinery.
Typical products are textiles, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, electronics and food.
Construction uses raw and manufacture materials to build.
Energy industries turn gas, coal, oil, water, wind or sun into energy.
Craft industries use traditional techniques carried out by craft workers.
Craft products are hand-made.
