SHORT INDEPENDENT CLAUSES MAY BE SEPARATED BY COMMAS

  • When you have small independent clauses you use commas to combine them.
  • Exception:Sentences that contain more than one independent clauses are compound or compound-complex sentences.
  • Example:The engine roared, the wheels spun, and a cloud of dust swirled behind the sports car.

USE COMMAS TO SEPARATE TWO OR MORE ADJECTIVES PRECEDING A NOUN

  • When multiple adjectives are describing something use a comma.
  • Exception: When the last adjective in a series is thought of as part of the noun, the comma before the adjective is omitted. If one of the words modifies another modifier, do not separate those two words with a comma.
  • Example: Are you going to that hot, crowded, noisy mall?
