Agglomeration Effects

  • This is the cost profits a company gains by moving next to an alike business
  • So a barbie shop might decide to put its store next to a kid's clothing store or a holiday gift area

Biotechnology

  • We are located in the Scandinavian Peninsula
  • Maybe you have heard of it, but biotechnology is using science and tech to improve things like plants and animals to boost their value.

Centrifugal Force

  • A centrifugal force is something that divides a country.
  • So say half of your class likes red and the other half likes blue and the class splits, that is a centrifugal force.

Decolonization

  • Decolonization is when a former colony or community gains their freedom from their mother country.
  • An example of this might be when you leave for summer and gain freedom from teachers.

Ecumene

  • Ecumene is a place on earth okay for people to live in.
  • For example, you may not be able to live in the arctic tundra, but you can live on a coast. That is a ecumene.

Formal Region

  • A formal region is an area with people of the same traits
  • So think of the popular blondes (that you secretly hate) that sit at the same table evryday.

Globalization

  • Globalization is the link between people, companies, and places of different nations.
  • So a little girl from Syria may have the exact same barbie doll you have. This is known as globalization.

Hierarchial Diffusion

  • This is the spread of something from people with power or status.
  • So you may see a lot of people with Adidas on because Justin Bieber said it was cool to wear them.

Innovation

  • Innovation is a new process, idea, or product.

  • The Kurds are a large Sunni Muslim people with their own language and culture.
  • Most Kurds live in Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Armenia, and Syria

  • A language understood by a group of people as the main everything language.
  • The language you speak now is a lingua franca

  • A megacity is a city with 10 million plus people

  • Nationalism is the love for your country
  • Ex: Vietnam is a very nationalistic country. Many people celebrate their nation.

Organic Farming

  • Organic Farming is farming that doesn't use any chemicals or fertilizers to grow their crops

Placelessness

  • Placelessness is the loss of something unique from a place.
  • Think about if your school started having uniforms. You may feel dissatisfied because now everyone looks the same and no one is special.

  • The quaternary sector is the knowledge part of the economy.
  • Such as education
  • Just think of it as the brains of the operation

Race

  • Race is a group of people coming from a common ancestor
  • Ex: Caucasian

  • Think of it as the opposite of placelessness.

  • This is the part of the economy that gives services
  • Ex: Fire Department

  • Urbanization is when a population starts going to large cities to live.

  • Vernacular Region is a place defined by what people think about it
  • Ex: Thinking of sweet tea when you hear the South

  • A world city is a global city that is important for the world economy
  • EX: New York City

Xylophone

  • An xylophone would be considered an artifact.

Yemen

  • Yemen would be considered a formal region; which is a place with like charcateristics, because of the same traditions and beliefs of its people.

Zero Population Growth

  • Zero population growth is when a place does not have any growth in their population
  • So births = deaths
