4 IMPORTANT EVENTS IN U.S. HISTORY

BY: PEYTON KRUPA

The Founding of Jamestown:
Explorers had been landing in America for some time before English settlers arrived in what is now Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. But it was in that spot on the James River that English colonization began and with it, the history of America. James I was king of England at that time, and he had granted approval for a group of businesspeople to settle in this new land. The men that traveled there had to go through many hardships, but in the end stuck it out and created the first successful colony. If these men hadn't been so determined we might not have settled in America

Abolishment of Slavery:
Slavery had been around since the 1700's, but the 1787 act separated slavery between the northern and southern states. Ever since the beginning of slavery there had abolitionists who are people going against slavery, trying to end it. When Lincoln became president some southern states seceded afraid he would take away there slavery. He did indeed try and do that so the U.S. went to war with itself and obviously pres. Lincoln won. He then passed the 13th amendment abolishing slavery for good. If this had never happened we could still have slavery present today.

Railroads:
When the first transcontinental railroad was completed in the spring of 1869, it was celebrated as a marvel of engineering and an invaluable new link between people and places. In addition to raw materials, these “iron horses” carried people west to settle the heartland and the frontier. As the railroads grew in power, they exerted increasing influence on local and state governments, eventually prompting Congress and reform-minded presidents to pass laws to regulate the new industry. Railroads thus transformed American society, politics, and economy unlike any other invention during the Gilded Age. If railroads hadn't been built we probably wouldn't have settled in the west.

The Invention of Electricity:
In 1880, Thomas Alva Edison invented the incandescent light bulb. It’s an invention that has been around since the 1800's and it is still used just as frequently. The light bulb was invented by using a low current electricity, a small carbonized filament, and an improved vacuum inside the globe; this was not an original invention by Edison this was an improved invention by Edison from 50 years ago. It is used in many different ways mostly just to light rooms when it's dark out ect. If the light bulb hadn't been invented we wouldn't be living and doing things in the same fashion and way. Everything would be set back one step and we would still have to rely on natural light.
