Project Natik

by Mary Beth Griggs | Alejandro Castaneda

The Problem

  • Microsoft takes 34 coal power plants to operate annually
  • almost half goes to maintain the temperature

The Solution

  • Microsoft plans to put the servers into the deep ocean
  • Tested it last year for several month, 1 km off of the Pacific Coast (27kW)

For why?

  • Servers could run up to 10 years under the ocean without human maintenence
  • Microsoft can carry the vessels in as little as three months.

Questions

  • Do you think that Microsoft is smart for sending their servers into the ocean?
  • What could go wrong?
  • How will this affect landlocked cities?
  • What could be the next step into better server efficiency?
