PRESENTATION OUTLINE

5 Themes of Geography

By Cora A. 7/8 B

1. Location

  • Location - where a place is on Earth
  • Absolute location - coordinates (latitude & longitude)
  • Relative Location - Approximate location, must use other locations to describe the relative location

Check out the More About Location Notes!

More About Location: This screenshot is of a map including Minneapolis and St. Paul. The map shows that St. Paul is Southeast of Minneapolis. That is the relative location of Minneapolis. When using relative location you must use another location and direction to describe the relative location of a place.
The absolute location of Minneapolis is 45° N, 93° W, because absolute location uses coordinates to describe it's location.

2. Place

An area characterized by everything in it

More about Place

  • Physical - natural features created by earth
  • Human characteristic - where humans change their environment
Continue to the next slide for a explanatory photo!

Look at the notes!

On this slide, the photo of the Grand Canyon in Arizona has an observation deck that shows BOTH physical and human characteristics.
The Grand Canyon it's self, is a natural feature created by the Earth. The observation deck is a human characteristic because it was built by humans.

3. Movement

The way people, products, information, and ideas travel to different places

More About Movement

  • Ideas - TV, internet, magazines, social media
  • People - Airplanes, cars, trains, trucks.
  • Products - shipping, stores
  • Information - Internet, phones, radio, books, email, magazines/newspaper

This photo represents movement because the woman on the bicycle is traveling along the beach to a place that she wants to be. I think that this also represents ideas because the idea of exercise, and low carbon emissions are ideas that this woman is pursuing by choosing to ride her bicycle.

  • Cultural

Check the notes!

This is an example of regions, because this is a photo of the MN Biomes or natural regions of Minnesota. It also contains highways and cities. The highways and cities are human regions.

5. Human/Environmental Interaction

How and how much humans have influenced their environment

(Don't forget to check out the notes!)

This is a photo that shows what the landscape looked like before someone built a road. A farmer had a problem, because his farm was up the trail and it was hard to travel to and from his home. He couldn't move his tractors very easily or at all. So he with the help of others modified the environment to meet his needs.
