What is it, how is it made, what is it made of, and how can it affect you?

What is processed meat?

  • Processed meat is meat that has been modified to either extend its shelf life or to change its taste.

How can meat be processed?

  • Meat is usually cured, salted, smoked, dried, or canned to be processed.

What meats are processed?

  • Some meats that are commonly processed include bacon, ham, hot dogs, beef jerky, and canned meat.

How is a hot dog processed?

  • Processed hot dogs are made from leftover scraps of meat that is crushed into a pulp with water to make a liquidy pink paste.

  • Processed meat is in the same category as asbestos, alcohol, arsenic and tobacco. These are group 1 carcinogens.
