CHILDHOOD

• Born in Chicago,IL on December 5th 1901
• in 1906 moved to a farm in MO and first learned how to draw
• Farm failed in 1911 and moved to Kansas City
• There he delivered papers for his father and fell in love with movies
• Moved back to Chicago in 1917
• Drew cartoons for his yearbook and took art classes

YOUNG ADULT YEARS

• Joined american ambulance corps in France as WW1 ended
• Kept day job but also made laugh-o-gram until bankruptcy
• Age 21 he moved to California
