FDR Memorial

  • FDR was born in 1882
  • He is elected NY State Senate in 1910
  • FDR established a polio treatment center in 1926
  • He is elected governor of New York in 1928
  • FDR is elected United States President in 1932

FDR Memorial
A quote that FDR wrote is " The only thing we have to fear is fear itself".
I think this quote means if you don't have anything to be afraid of then you won't be afraid.
The significance of the four rooms is that each one term of which he was elected as a president.

Vietnam Wall

  • The Vietnam Wall has 58,286 names on it.
  • I think the reflective quality was chosen so that you can respect them and put yourself in their shoes.
  • The statue was later added to the memorial because it represented the healing of the losses and the nation.

Capitol

  • The Capitol is the meeting place of the U.S. Congress and the legislature of the U.S. Federal Government.
  • A piece of art I found was called the Declaration of Independence it's important because it depicts the moment the Declaration was signed.
  • The Senate was established in 1787.The House of reps. Was established in 1789. The Special Powers is a system of checks and balances.

Arlington Cemetery

  • Three famous people that were buried in the cemetery were John F. Kennedy, Grace Hopper and Robert Todd Lincoln.
  • The Tomb of the Unknown solider is where an identified soldier that fought for America in WWIis buried.
  • Another memorial in the cemetery is the Nurse Memorial. It honors a nurse that served in WWI.

  • In 1861 the Battle of Bull Rum took place.
  • In 1862, his son William, died.
  • In 1863 he issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
  • In 1864 he named Ulysses S. Grant as Union Gerneral.
  • In 1865 he gave his second Inaugural Address.

  • The Gettysburg Address is important because it taught Americans human equality.
  • The epitaph on the Lincoln Memorial means Lincoln changed the nation by teaching Americans that the color of your skin doesn't matter to whom you are.

  • The Washington Monument's height is significant because no building in D.C is allowed to be taller
  • An obelisk is a stone pillar typically having a square or rectangle cross section and a pyramidal top set up as a monument or land mark.

Jefferson Memorial
Excerpts from the Declaration of Independence are included in the Jefferson Memorial because Jefferson believed very mightily that what the Declaration of Independence stated. The material for the statue could not be bronze because of rations but they later took down that statue and added a bronze one.

  • In 1743 Jefferson was born.
  • In 1803 Jefferson oversaw the Louisiana Purchase.
  • On July 4, 1826,Jefferson died on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

World War II
The cartoon drawing on the memorial is called Kilroy. It is a cartoon drawing of a man looking over a wall, that was a popular piece of graffiti drawn by American troops. The cartoon's significance was that it came to be a sign that the American solders had gone through that area.

The message on the Freedom Wall is"Here we mark the price of freedom" means that in order to gain freedom the price to pay was all the soldiers that died and that the memorial is marking their importance. Another thing on the Freedom Wall is the 4048 gold stars. Each one represents 100 soldiers that died.


The Korean Memorial
The phrase "Freedom is not free" means the right to be free comes with a cost and people have to die fighting for it. The purpose of the 19 statues is to tell that the race and ethnicity don't tell the person you are. The Mural Wall is a 164 feet long wall that consists of approximately 2400 images depicting the Army,Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force.

  • The Constitution is important because it gives American Citizens rights and freedom.
  • The Declaration of Independence is important because it is a symbol of liberty.
  • The Bill of Rights is important because it spells out the immunities of individual citizens.
  • We need to keep record of our nation's history because they help us claim our rights and entitlements.

Library of Congress

  • It is the largest library in the world.
  • It is the oldest Federal cultural institution in the nation.
  • Approximatley half of the library's books and serial collections are in languages other that English.
  • The Library of Congress has over 158 million items in the library.
  • The Library contains approximately 100 extremely rare children's books.

The Library of Congress has an extensive rare books collection one of these includes the rare children's books.
The purpose of the U.S. Copyright Office is to administers the national copyrights system and provides advice on copyright law to Congress, Federal Agencies, courts, and the public.

Supreme Court

  • One current Supreme Court justice is Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was born in 1933.
  • The Supreme Court got it's own building in 1935. It was previously in the Capitol.
  • The Supreme Court is different fop rom other courts because it is the final court you go to for trial, also.

Memorial
The theme of hope is represented in the sculpture of the memorial because when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his I Have A Dream speech he made it clear that he wanted to give African Americans freedom and he was their symbol of freedom. So his sculpture represents that the hope will live on.

the significance of the street address is that in 1964 was the year that Martin Luther King Jr. Won the Nobel Peace Prize. The quote "Out of a mountain of despair,a stone of hope" means that segregation of is the mountain of despair and the stone of hope is the people trying to get civil rights for African Americans.
