Julian’s real name is unknown, but is believed to be something similar to Julian. When Julian was 30 years old she became gravely ill and was expected to die; on the seventh day the medical crisis passed and she had a series of visions/showings. This led her to contemplate the passions of Christ.
Julian of Norwich wrote a book called revelations of divine love, her book is still widely read today.
Not much is known about Julian’s lifestyle, but is though she may have been from a privileged family. After surviving from her illness she became an anchoress and lived in a small hut near a church in Norwich, there she devoted herself to prayer and the contemplation of her vision.
Julian wrote her book “Revelations of divine love” around the year 1395. It is thought to be the first English book to be written by a woman.
How did religion influence Julian?
Julian of Norwich was roman catholic and believed that the last rite blesses and strengthens a person both bodily and spiritually. By surviving her illness it gave Julian a greater understanding of Christ. Which led to her becoming an anchoress.
Julian of Norwich wrote a book called “Revelations of Divine Love”. A famous quote from her book is “All shall be well, All shall be well… For there is a force a force of love moving through the universe. That holds us fast and never lets go”.
Julian is the most important mystic of the 14th century. People often visited her where she lived outside the Church in a hut seeking her advice and comfort.
