Testing

Our ranking is 8/10... why cant everyone else test like us???

-Based on 2013 STAR test scores
school received an 8 of 10 ranking

-school has 20% english learners

-Academic Performing Index- measures overall school performance and improvement over time on state wide testing

-Goal is or all schools to be at 800 and Merlinda has 871

-school receives API scores and so do subgroups: lowest API subgroup= students w/disabilities and Eng. lang. learners
highest API scores= Asians

-unlike others schools, they dont have alot of english learners

-most parents speak english

-they are trying not to increase school population to keep classroom size small

Although our neighborhood looks the same, they are very different...

in regards to neighborhoods,
median home valuein West Covina is is 300,000 pomona homes half of this

2bedroom rent 1580, pomona morgage payment is probably less than this

crime rate has decreased over the last 12yrs, other cities where schools are not performing good, like pomona has crime rates increasing every year

city has mall, theater, restaurants, library, banks, court, pomona has few sit down restaurants and a library that is almost always closed

Rewards and Consequences

Do teachers get rewarded for being fabulous????
-Ms penas Reward system consists of dividing the class into 5groups, everyone earns point for good behavior, teams can also lose points

-this teaches honesty & responsibility for ones actions and how it affects those around them, can be compared to ones contribution to society
-allows for wasting time

consequences for bad behavior
-warning
-lose recess
-call parents
-see principal
straight forward

teachers do get rewarded: they have teacher of the year award and teahers has special parking throughtout the year

HOPE

understand. motivate. support.
-by being able to understand and meet the many challenges that English learners face, one opens many doors of opportunities for them

-when one shows understanding, motivates students to perform at their maximum potential and supports students they are able to compete for jobs like everyone else

-when a student's culture is validated one is able to learn from and about them
