PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Making Sentences Interesting

THINK LIKE A PHOTOGRAPHER!

Sentences are pictures!

WORDS CREATE IMAGES AND ACT LIKE CAMERA LENS.

A wide angle lens shows you the big picture,

BUT NOT MUCH DETAIL.

A zoom lens focus the attention

ON A MUCH SMALLER OR DETAILED IMAGE.

And a macro lens shows

THE NARROWEST DETAILS, THE TINY DETAILS.

The world would be a boring place

IF PHOTOGRAPHERS ONLY USED ONE KIND OF LENS.

The same is true for writing.

IF ALL SENTENCE HAVE THE SAME AMOUNT OF DETAILS...

The writing is monotoned...

AND BORING!

What kind of word create the image?

NOUNS ARE PEOPLE, PLACES, THINGS AND ABSTRACT IDEAS.

A horse and his rider,

WAIT PATIENTLY IN THE STREAM.

Sometimes the nouns are abstract ideas.

CONNECTION IS HALF THE BATTLE.

VERBS ARE THE ACTIONS,

WHAT THE NOUNS ARE DOING.

Verbs have tenses, they tell time.

THE PAST, PRESENT, OR FUTURE LIES IN THE VERB SELECTION.

THE PRESENT PARTICIPLE REFERS TO THINGS

THAT ARE STILL HAPPENING. THESE WORDS END IN "ING"...LIKE SMILING.

Using the present participle can be like a zoom lens.

FIND THE NOUNS... HORSE, JOCKEY, DIRT, HORSESHOES, HOOF, BOOTS, SILKS, REINS....

Now "zoom" in on the details of the nouns.

List action "ing" words that describe the nouns.

DIRT...FLYING, HOOVES... POUNDING, SILKS... BLOWING

HORSES... RACING, JOCKEYS... FOCUSING

Wide angle sentence...

THE HORSES RACED AROUND THE TRACK.

Zoom lens sentence...

DIRT FLYING AND HOOVES POUNDING, THE HORSES RACED AROUND THE TRACK.

The horses, dirt flying and hooves pounding, raced around the track.

THE HORSES RACED AROUND THE TRACK, DIRT FLYING AND HOOVES POUNDING.

Word selection increases interest level of the sentence.

REMEMBER TO THINK LIKE A PHOTOGRAPHER, CHANGE THE LENS!
