Radioactivity

Ileana Hernandez,Per 6, Chemistry CP

Alpha Particle:
2 protons & 2 neutrons emitted from a nucleus

Beta particle:
An electron emitted from the nucleus during a radioactive decay

Fission:
Splitting of a heavy nucleus into lighter nuclei

Fusion:
Combining of nuclei to form a bigger and heavier nucleus.

Gamma:
High energy photons that are emitted by radioactive nuclei.

Half-life:
Time required for half the atoms of a radioactive nuclide to decay

Positron:
A particle that has the same mass as an electron but has a positive charge

Radioactivity:
The emission of ionizing radiation or particles caused by the spontaneous disintegration of atomic nuclei
