Who Is My Explorer?

  • Leif Eriksson was born in 980 AD and lived till1025.
  • Leif was born in Iceland.
  • His dad was Erik the Red.
  • Leif never learned to read or write.
  • Erik the Red was banished to Greenland in 985 and Leif and his mother joined him one year later.
  • Erik the Red was the Chieftain of this new settlement in Greenland.
  • Leif learned to hunt, fish, build, farm and sail.
  • After Leif did his exploring and after his father died, he became the Chief of the settlement that his dad had ruled.

WHAT DID MY EXPLORER DO?

  • Leif found Vinland (Newfoundland), Hellaland (Baffin Islands) and Markland (Labrador).
  • He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean
  • He was inspired by Bjarni Herjolfson who was an explorer that Leif admired.
  • Greenland was getting crowded so Leif wanted to find a less crowded place to live.
  • He built a settlement in Vinland and lived there for one year.
