Hypothermia

  • Hypothermia is a medical emergency.
  • It is caused by prolonged exposure to extreme cold.
  • It happens when a body loses heat faster than it can produce heat.
  • Hypothermia causes a drop in body temperature. Mild hypothermia starts at 35 degrees.
  • Heat loss happens through radiation, conduction, convection, evaporation, and respiration.

Fire Building

  • Fire is important because it keeps you warm, keeps away animals and it signals people for help.
  • A good way to build a fire is to start with small pieces and bark and wood and then stack bigger logs on top.
  • You can start a fire with matches, a lighter or something that makes a spark.

Food

  • Some good things to bring on a hike are:
  • Granola bars would give you nutrition and fast energy.
  • Dried Fruit gives you fast energy.
  • Jerky and nuts have protein and fat which take longer for your body to burn.
