PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE HORRORS OF HELL

INTERPRETATION OF EDWARDS' SERMON

"Tall, slender, and delicate," Edwards stands before his crowds as an artist of his own vision of hell.

  • It is a wonder why we did not all go to Hell last night.. Jonathan believes that we are undeserving of this God, though he is the only thing we have to thank for our mere existence.

Untitled Slide

  • We are always in danger of falling into this bottomless Hell; always in danger of suffering this punishment.

Untitled Slide

  • Jonathan's preachings scare the people that are oh-so blessed to attend. They fear for their lives and ultimately believe that their going to Hell is inevitable unless he says otherwise.

  • His grasp of time in this hell is awful to imagine, as this God is unrelenting and merciless. He says, "It would be dreadful to suffer this fierceness and wrath of Almighty God one moment; but you must suffer it to all eternity..."

Untitled Slide

  • He teaches us that we know not who the unlucky souls will be to be subjected to this misery. He says there is reason to believe that it will be many of us..

  • "It would be a wonder, if some that are now present should not be in hell in a very short time.."
  • In my own grasp, Jonathan's hell was taught to be expected, yet not anticipated; feared, yet not surprising; and terribly horrible, yet realistic and logical.
