Stereotypically, most Americans believe that families start with a couple falling in love

Of course, in real life, families are created in lots of different ways

But since the "dream" is for two people to fall in love, as we talk about how families are represented in media, let's start with romance

This week, you will be watching the movie Crazy Stupid Love to learn how to analyze romance in film and television

To learn to analyze romance in film and television, first, make notes on all the romances you are shown

Next ask your self what the romances you are seeing tell you about romance

In Crazy Stupid Love, we see seven romances

Romances in Crazy stupid Love

  • Cal and Emily
  • Robbie has a crush on Jessica
  • Jessica has a crush on Cal
  • Emily and David
  • Richard and Hannah
  • Hannah and Jacob
  • Bernie and Claire

Crazy Stupid Love starts out with shots of couple's feet.
What message does that montage of feet send?

In the film, one of Cal's work colleagues says to him:
"It could have been cancer, buddy. It's just a divorce."
What message does that send?

When Cal and his son toss a baseball in the movie, what messages does that scene send about romance?

How this will work:
examples I talk about and examples you write about
