Puritans vs Pilgrims vs Protestants

Protestants

  • followers of christian faith
  • originated from the protestant reformation
  • movement against what its followers considered to be errors in the Roman Catholic Church
  • follows any western christian church that is separate from the roman catholic church

Pilgrims

  • separatists that thought the Church of England and Catholic Church had lost its way, beyond repair
  • believed in predestination
  • believed there was only 2 sacraments: baptism and lord's supper
  • Church heirarchy, five officers: Pastor, teacher, elder, deacon, and deaconess

Puritans

  • English reformed protestants
  • wanted to purify church of england from roman catholic practices
  • believed god had formed and agreement with them

Differences

  • pilgrims were separatists
  • puritans were non-separating congregationalists
  • Protestants apart of western church and follow principles of reform
