Racial

With racism still existing in this generation, social norms could harm a group of people. People of color considered being a minority in the United States, there are cases of social norms where racism is somehow normal. If a person of color does not meet the standard of a job or a group, then they are easily excluded from doing what they desire.

“Sins”

In this generation, homosexuality is still considered as a “sin.” Lots of people degrade and discriminate who are in LGBTQ+ community just because it’s not normal. Expected gender roles can be problematic when people do not fit under societal expectations of their gender. Christians and some other religions shame on them because it says that homosexual activity is wrong in the Bible. From that, people can’t express how they feel and be with whoever they want to be with.

Conclusion to the novel:

Like in modern society, discrimination against people outside of the “standard” is present in the novel, “Scarlet Letter.” In the novel, Hester commits an adultery, so lots of women and men shame her for what she did. Because of that, Hester and her daughter Pearl, needs to sneak around places in order to not get hurt by people’s words.
