Shark Finning
- The inhumane practice of hacking off a shark's fins and tossing it's body back to the sea
- At this point the shark will likely starve, be eaten by another fish, or drown
The Issue
- Hundreds of millions of sharks are finned annually
- Many species being pushed to the brink of extinction
- Since the 1970s populations of some species have been decimated by over 95%
Why Shark Finning Occurs
- Shark fin soup, of Chinese origin, is considered to be a delicacy
- It can cost upwards of $100 a bowl
- The soup is being consumed in unsustainable numbers
The Cause
- Unsustainable/out of control rates of shark finning
- Money coming before our concern to care for and protect the other species around us
Possible Future Effects
- Many or all species of sharks can reach extinction
- Changing shark populations will destabilize ecosystems in the hydrosphere
