The Coin

How do we use artifacts to engage learners?

Programmatic Instruction vs. Rich Learning

Programmatic

  • targets a specific skill
  • focus on memorization
  • grounded in providing the correct answer
  • teacher is viewed as expert
  • experiences are often stand-alone

Rich Learning

  • targets a group of skills
  • focus on understanding
  • allows student choice and voice
  • teacher is viewed as mentor or facilitator
  • experiences are longer and complex

Programmatic teaching should not be more than half of the instruction time (54). The preference is to embed programmatic teaching within the RLE.

RLE Benefits

  • engaging
  • students have multiple points of entry to the learning
  • provides a practical way to differentiate
