COAL MINING IN ENGLAND

  • They start the day by going down into the cage 500ft
  • Go through the tubs to their spots
  • Get assigned jobs by deputy
  • Deputy makes assessments and reports

  • They work for the rest of the day
  • Work day ends at around 8 o'clock

IN THE MINE

  • While 500ft below the surface, miners have to eat very little
  • Since miners have to crouch while working, a full stomach causes heartburn

WOMAN AND THE MINES

  • Before the 1842 Royal Commission reported, women worked down the mines.
  • In later years woman worked on the surface and supported their husbands that worked in the mines

  • The Coalmining History Resource Center is a database of over 164,000 records of accidents and death.
  • They stretch from 1600 to 1900

JOSEPH BIRTLEY

  • The youngest recorded death of a mine worker is Joseph Birtley
  • At 7 years old in 1889, he was run over by wagons by taking dinner to the works
