What is it?

An author's message is a life lesson that a writer wants you to learn.

YSK: An author's message is sometimes called the "theme" of a book.

Sometimes an author will state this life lesson directly.

Other times readers will need to make inferences (reasonable guesses) based off a text.

How do you find an author's message?

Author's Message in 3 Steps

  • Identify a topic using one word or a short phrase (love, friendship, family, war, etc).
  • Ask: What life lesson does this text teach about _____ (topic or phrase)? What does the author say about __?
  • Write a claim that expresses the message universally (this lesson should be applicable beyond the story).
