The Roaring Twenties was a period of Western Society that occurred during and around the 1020's. it was the decade of prosperity and dissipation and of jazz bands and bootleggers. For the first time more Americans lived in cities than in farms and economic growth prospered.

As the partying began in the 1920's, along came the passing of the Prohibition Act. It was the amendment passed prohibiting the manufacture and sale of alcohol. The increase of the illegal production and sale of liquor also known as bootlegging, and the accompanying rise in gang violence and other crimes led to waning support for Prohibition by the end of the 1920.

One of the most familiar symbols of the 1920's was the flapper girl. For women in the 20's with their short bobbed hair, and short outfits, they were considered scandalous. Along with the " new woman" in society, came the "new woman" roles in everyday jobs. Women's roles take a massive leap in this era. They are allowed to vote and take on jobs normally done by men.

This was also the flourishing of American Literature. The period can also be known as the "Second Renaissance", do to the Impressionism and expressionism that aroused greatly during this time. F. Scott Fitzgerald was among the most popular writers of the decade. He achieved limited success in his lifetime, but after his death, The Great Gatsby has become an American Classic with it being one of the most popular books of its time.

F. Scott Fitzgerald lived with his wife Zelda Sayre, whom he was madly in love with. He had met her at a country club dance in Alabama. They shared a child together as well. His main wish in life was to be in love with Zelda forever. A lot of Fitzgerald work included Zelda. As the years hit 1930, Zelda was diagnosed with schizophrenia and spent her remaining years in various health clinics. Fitzgerald suffered a heart attack as well. Unfortunately, soon after, her mental health began to fail even more and she died in a fire.

The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald that follows a cast of characters in a fictional town of West and East Egg. The novel did not succeed in his lifetime, but became one of the most famous books of its time.
