The Seven Principles of the Catholic Social Teachings

By Isabella Basler #5

LIFE AND DIGNITY

OF THE HUMAN PERSON

Things have a price and can be for sale, but people have a dignity that is priceless and worth far more than things.

~Pope Francis

DEFINITION:
Even when we are just starting school, we learn that life is sacred. We are all created in God’s image and likeness. We are therefore equal and we should not demean one another.

CALL TO

FAMILY, COMMUNITY, AND PARTICIPATION

If you act justly with one another, God will dwell in the land.

~Jeremiah 7:5-7

DEFINITION:
The way we organize and affect our society determines our place after we die. From this, we are called by God and our peers to serve our community for the better. Even the simplest acts can make a difference.

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Boaz cares for Ruth, a widower and a foreigner, giving her far more than the law requires.

~Ruth: 2:2-23

DEFINITION:
Rights and Responsibilities are essentially two Principles in one. We have specific rights and have responsibilities that are akin to the Ten Commandments. Put together, these rights and responsibilities have the potential to make a healthy community.

OPTION FOR THE POOR

AND VULNERABLE

The Gospel takes away our right forever, to discriminate between the deserving and the undeserving poor.

~Dorothy Day

DEFINITION:
The poor and vulnerable have always and will always be on this earth. Despite this, we are called upon to help those who are not able to help themselves. We are to stewards of faith so we can not only help people but also inspire those to do good.

CARE FOR

GOD'S CREATION

You are called to care for creation not only as responsible citizens, but also as followers of Christ!

~Pope Francis

DEFINITION:
Caring for creation is not an optional activity. It is a mandatory action that must be done regularly. By doing so, we can build a good relationship with the Lord.

THE DIGNITY OF WORK

AND THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS

Woe to him who treats his workers unjustly.

~Jeremiah 22:13

DEFINITION:
This Principle is essentially the foundation of the way our economy should be. It's a branch off of the rights and responsibilities because our basic rights are being protected as workers. This way, we can support ourselves and our families.

SOLIDARITY

Living rightly means to love one another.

~Romans 13:8-10

DEFINITION:
God created all of us in his image and likeness. Due to this, we should all give an effort to strengthen our love for one another. Love, after all, is the strongest virtue there is.
