WHO IS MY EXPLORER?
Born 1245 in Venice, Italy.
His father and uncle were in Asia to trade for 14 years when he was growing up.
His mother died when he was a baby and he was raised by relatives.
Marco Polo was 17 when he was going to Asia with his uncle and dad to trade.
He died in 1324 when he was 41

WHAT DID MY EXPLORER DO?
Was 17 when he travelled with his father and uncle to Asia to sell and trade goods.
Very good friends with Kubla Khan who the Emperor.
Worked in Kubla Khan's service for 17 years on Asia.
Discovered new lands in Asia and other places with lots of spices and jewels.
Became very rich.

WHERE DID MY EXPLORER DO HIS EXPLORING?
He went all around Asia.
Marco Polo's travels took him to countries that we now call China, Afghanistan, the Gobi Desert and Turkey (the Mongol Empire).
South East Asia.

He left for Asia in 1271 with his father and uncle.
He worked for the Kubla Khan from 1275-1292.

WHY DID MY EXPLORE GO EXPLORING
Kubla Kahn sent Marco on trips around the Mongolian Empire because the great ruler wanted to know more about the land he claimed and its people.
They travelled throughout South East Asia and saw many lands were rich with silks in jewels.

He needed supplies, food, warm, clothing, and maps for discovering.
He also travelled by foot and climbing.
He went on big ships with lots of people to help him.

HOW DID THINGS CHANGE IN THE WORLD AFTER MY EXPLORER EXPLORE IT?
Polo wrote a book called "The Discoveries of the World".
His book inspired Christopher Columbus to travel to these lands.
His book taught people about Asia.
