CHAPTER 1

SUPSPICIOUS

I trudged home, through the snowy yards. I avoided walking on the sidewalk because it was icy and slippery. It was Friday. Most kids were happy to be out of school, looking forward to a weekend full of fun. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t cheer up.

The thing was, I was worried about my mom. For days she had been acting strangely, doing odd things.
I got to the front door, and scrounged around in my backpack pocket for the key. Nothing. I sighed. Brian, the school prankster must have taken it.

Brian didn’t mean to be mean, he was trying to be funny, but it just wasn’t amusing anymore.
I walked around to the back of the house and grabbed the spare key. I opened the door and stepped inside.

As I sat down on the couch and turned on my PlayStation, I wasn’t really thinking about the game. My mind had drifted back to the strange things my mom had done.
For instance, last Monday, when I was about to leave for school, my mom asked me to bring her coffee to her. I grabbed the cup and then stared at it. Inside, the coffee was blacker than normal.

It looked more, I don’t know, oily, I guess, and less creamy than coffee usually is. I smelled it and grimaced. It smelled TERRIBLE. I held the cup out at arms length and walked over to give it to my mom.
Well, that’s just what happened on Monday. On Wednesday, a while after school was over, it was dark outside, and my mom was going to come home from her night shift any minute.

I sat at the kitchen table, staring out the window, looking for her car.
A couple minutes later, I saw her car pull in the driveway. Soon, she bustled through the front door. I stood up.
“Hi, mom,” I said.
“Hi,” mom said, while she hung up her coat. When she turned to face me, I jumped back, surprised and scared.

Her eyes, which were usually an olive green, were blood red. I must have had a weird expression on my face, because she looked at me strange. I shook my head and looked back. Her eyes were their normal green again!
At that moment I had thought that I was just imagining things. But now, sitting on my couch and playing my video game, I thought, what if it was actually real?
