Interesting Facts

  • In earths crust, oxygen is the most common.
  • Oxygen reacts with almost everything on earth to form a compound.
  • When a light is shined on it, Selenium has an increase in electrical conductivity

Finding the Elements

  • You can find these elements basically anywhere on earth, every second, your body is in contact with it. Its in the food you eat, and in the nostrils and mouth you breath through. If we lost contact with oxygen, we would go extinct within minutes.

Characteristics

  • Oxygen appears as a light blue in gas form up close, it doesn't have a texture because it is a gas. Oxygen is found in every other element. When anything undergoes a combustion reaction, it produces CO2 and H2O

Untitled Slide

  • What is your element’s atomic number? Oxygen's atomic number is 8
  • What is your element’s atomic mass? Oxygen's atomic mass is 15.999 grams
  • Is your element a metal, nonmetal or metalloid? My element is a non metal.
  • What is the density of your element and would it float or sink in water? My element makes up water, so it would neither sink, nor float. Its' density is 1.429 km/m cubed at 20 degrees celcius.

In The Real World

  • You will find oxygen where ever you go, its a basic element that we need to survive. Three examples would be In a house, underwater, and outside.

Interesting Facts

  • Oxygen is colorless
  • Oxygen is odorless
  • 1/5 of earths atmosphere is made up of oxygen
  • Oxygen is the third most abundant element in the universe by mass.

Historiacal Facts

  • Joseph Priestley and Carl Scheele both discovered oxygen seperatley, but mostly, Priestly is given credit.
  • They were able to produce oxygen by heating mercuric oxide HgO
  • It was first called "dephlogisticated air"
