SURVIVAL RATES

  • If diagnosed in early stages 94% survival rate
  • Reality is that less than 50% actually survive due to late diagnoses (47.4%)
  • National Cancer Institute states only 2.4% of all cancer deaths are due to ovarian cancer (2018)

RISK FACTORS

  • Family history of female cancer (ovarian, as well as breast or uterine cancer)
  • BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene
  • Obese
  • Never pregnant
  • Endometriosis
  • Post menopausal
  • Lynch syndrome
  • Some fertility and hormonal medications

  • Previous pregnancy
  • Breast feeding
  • Birth control >5years
  • Salpingo‐Oophorectomy
  • Prophylactic bilateral oophorectomy (in BRCA1/2 positive mutations) reduces risk by 96%

Pelvic exam or RECTO-PELVIC exam

BIOPSY
A small tissue sample is taken from the ovaries through laparoscopy or a needle inserted into the abdomen guided by ultrasound or CT

Imaging

  • Transvaginal ultrasound
  • MRI
  • PET/CT scan

BLOOD TESTS

  • Cancer antigen (CA-125)
  • Inhibin, estrogen, and testosterone levels, which may be elevated with a stromal cell tumor
  • Liver and kidney function tests

SURGERY
