Why might people sell their businesses and farms to travel to the Oregon Country?

Financial reasons, cheap land, bank failures, abundant resources in the west, personal reasons, spirit of adventure

What might be dangerous and difficult about traveling west on a wagon train?

Bad weather, mountains, illness, finding food, becoming lost, encounters with American Indians

What types of jobs did people have in the 1840's?

Wheelwright: builds and repairs wheels
Cooper: makes wooden barrels and tubs
Blacksmith: makes iron tools and horseshoes
Peddler: travels and sells things
Farmer, teacher, doctor, banker

In what ways would families of 1840's be different than families of today? Why?

Less mobile, focused on family life, harder working because lack of technology, more focused on crafts and handworking skills.
