CARBOHYDRATES

  • Chemical composition=CH2O
  • Most commonly found as sugar molecules called glucose in living organisms.
  • Definition-any of a large group of organic compounds occurring in foods and living tissues
  • Functions-structural support, short-time energy source

CARBOHYDRATE EX.

  • Bread
  • Grains
  • Pasta

PROTEINS

  • Chemical compositions-Amino acid held together via peptide bonds
  • Made of amino acids
  • Functions-storage, transport, regulatory, movement, structure
  • Definition-any of a class of nitrogenous organic compounds that consist of large molecules

PROTEIN EX.

  • Muscles
  • Hair
  • Teeth

LIPIDS

  • Chemical composition- fatty acid
  • Definition-any of a class of organic compounds that are fatty acids or their derivatives and are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. They include many natural oils, waxes, and steroids.
  • Functions-Long energy storage, insulation, protection from physical shock, hormones
  • Not soluble in water, solvable in hydrophobic liquids

LIPIDS EX.

  • Phospholipids
  • Wax
  • Fats
  • Oil
  • Steroids
  • Triglycerides

NUCLEIC ACID

  • Nucleic acids Two types: - single Nucleic acids are composed of long a. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA double helix) Ribonucleic acid (RNA strand) chains of dehydration synthesis
  • Chemical composition-phosphate group, pentose sugar, nitrogen bases

NUCLEIC ACID CONT.

  • Function- they make up genetic information in living things. There are two types of nucleic acid and they are DNA and RNA.

NUCLEIC ACID EX.

  • DNA
  • RNA
  • Cytosine
