Dephi

  • was inhabited since Mycenaean times (14th-11th century B.C
  • 8th century B.C Delphi was internationally known for the occular powers of Pythia
  • Oracular powers- seeing the future

Pythia

  • was the priestess of Delphi
  • Pythia sat on a three legged stool and inhaled ethylene gasses
  • She foretold the future (muttered)
  • priest then interpreted her words for mortals' ears
  • Also known as the "Oracle of Delphi

People and Pythia (cont)

  • People had so much faith in the Oracle that they asked her for advice on major decisions
  • many rich people paid lots of money to hear her speak
  • Oracle was only opened a couple months in the year, very competive

Influence of "The Oracle"

  • Delphi was so important that it was called the center "Omphalos" of the world
  • made "Delphi games" every four years like the Olympics
  • to commemorate the God Apollo who gave Pythia powers

End of Delphi

  • Fell into Roman hands at 191 B.C
  • stripped of its treasures by General Sylla in 86 B.C
  • The Thracian Maedi razed it again three years later
  • legend has it that the Thracian Maedi extinguished the sacred fire in Delphi that was there fore centuries
