1. Generating ideas

2. Prioritizing ideas

Not just new ideas, but good ideas

Important to make a distinction between new ideas, and new, good ideas.

Realize: new ideas are a commodity, and I bet if you were tasked to you, could generate over 200 ideas in one day if you spent. There are several blogs and email subscriptions that send you generic testing ideas. Optimizely is a good resource for generic ideas as well.

But what I want to talk more about it new ideas that are also good ideas. And that begs the question:

What makes any idea, a "good" idea?

"Good" is certainly subjective, but i decided to take a stab at defining what distinguishes a good idea, for just an idea.

Good ideas are:

  • Strategically aligned
  • Synthesized from supporting data

Strategic Alignment

  • Traffic to a page/funnel
  • Experiment history
  • Your boss's key success metrics
1. Traffic to the page or funnel where your idea would be implemented is important for accurately testing your hypothesis and achieving statistically significant results in a reasonable time.

2. It's important to know what elements on the page where your idea resides have been tested before. There may be a reason why that hero image seems out of place at first glance. :)

3. If your idea is to drive email sign ups for the blog, but you have limited resources and leadership is very interested in converting paid-traffic, you'll confuse them with your decision making.

Good ideas are:

  • Strategically aligned ✓
  • Synthesized from supporting data

Synthesized from supporting data

  • Qualitative: user testing, surveys, competiton
  • Quantitative: analytics, heat maps
Customer research specialist who helps me collect qualitative data - if you don't have one of those, as Optimizely says, try simply having a friend or family member try your targeted flow to collect data and in return ideas.

Ideally you work with several individuals and see trends between their pains and suggestions.

Quantitative - analyst and data team that helps identify points of opportunity on the site using google analytics, but if you guys have suggestions or examples of how quant data can drive ideas I'd love to talk more.
